Open in FishNerdItaicy Pantanal Eco Lodge (the current name of the former Pousada Itaicy) is located in the Northern Pantanal, in Santo Antônio do Leverger (MT), on the banks of the Cuiabá River — about 27 km from Cuiabá via the MT-040 highway. It is not in Corumbá (MS) nor on the Miranda River or Passo do Lontra: that location, which was in the original notes, belongs to a different property and has been confirmed as incorrect by the lodge's own official website.
Catch-and-release fishing, not free fishing
The official website describes the operation as 'catch-and-release sport fishing on the Cuiabá River (Cota Zero Project)': everything caught goes back into the water, there is no keeping of fish. This changes what anglers should expect compared to the 'open fishing' idea from the old notes. Besides fishing, the lodge operates birdwatching (166 species catalogued by an ornithologist in May 2024) and photo safaris.
What you catch in the Cuiabá River
- Dourado (Salminus brasiliensis) — the region's main trophy fish
- Pintado and Cachara catfish (Pseudoplatystoma spp.)
- Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus)
- Piraputanga (Brycon hilarii)
- Piauçu / Piapara (Megaleporinus spp.)
- Jaú catfish, according to local anglers' reports
This list comes from anglers' reports and third-party booking sites — the lodge's official website does not detail fishing species, only mentioning pacu in its cuisine. Treat it as the most likely species available in this stretch of river, not a per-species guarantee.
When to go
The official website recommends the dry season, from May to September, when the river level drops, the water becomes clearer, and fish concentrate in the main channel — the best period for both fishing and wildlife viewing. This replaces the previous 'March to October' information: March and part of April fall within the piracema spawning season, when fishing is closed in Mato Grosso.
Technique and bait
- Live tuvira bait, fished on the bottom or drifted — a classic for dourado, pintado, and cachara
- Plugs, spoons, and surface lures — dourado and cachorra along the banks and in currents
- Corn/soy chumming — pacu and piauçu in vegetated areas
- Fly fishing — viable when the water is clearer, from July to September
Facilities, price, and how to get there
The lodge has air-conditioned suites, a restaurant serving Pantanal cuisine (roasted pacu, arroz carreteiro), a swimming pool, a games room, and boats with a native guide. Fishing packages are all-inclusive, but the exact price is not confirmed by the official website — secondary sources vary between R$ 1,200 and R$ 2,150 per angler/day. To get there: fly to Marechal Rondon Airport (CGB), in Cuiabá/Várzea Grande, then about 35 to 50 minutes by paved road via the MT-040 to Santo Antônio do Leverger.
