Pousada PiraAçu is located in southern Amazonas, on the banks of the Aripuanã River, and is the only sport fishing lodge with access to an exclusive stretch of rivers and lakes in the region — it is not in the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve or in São Sebastião do Uatumã, as older records claimed. Fishing takes place on the Aripuanã itself and its tributaries Paxiúba, Buiuçu, and Guariba, as well as Guariba I and II lakes and an advance camp above the Sumaúma Rapids, for those who want to venture even farther from the base.

  • Tucunaré (peacock bass) (the standout species in the dry season appears to be the tucunaré-pinima/peacock bass, not the vazzoleri)
  • Aruanã (Silver Arowana)

Trairão (wolf fish) shows up on some tour operator lists, but no reliable source confirms this species specifically for the stretch of the Aripuanã fished by the lodge — treat that claim with caution.

When to go

July through October is the low-water season: the river drops, rocks and beaches appear, the lakes become concentrated, and the tucunaré (peacock bass) becomes more visible and aggressive toward topwater lures — this is the best window for anglers wanting to prioritize that species. From January to May, during the high-water season, the game shifts to catfish species (piraíba, jaú, pirarara/redtail catfish), which become more active when the river is high. December already marks the start of the rains and tends to be a transition period, not a peak.

Techniques and lures

  • Fly fishing: streamers, dry flies, and terrestrials work well on the Aripuanã and on the Paxiúba and Buiuçu tributaries, both from the boat and wading
  • Poppers and frogs near vegetation for tucunaré (peacock bass), especially in the dry season
  • Whitebait ('local baitfish') provided by the lodge; live bait such as tuvira is not included — anglers must buy it there or bring their own

Facilities and pricing

The lodge offers double and quadruple rooms with air conditioning and private bathrooms (not floating bungalows), full board, non-distilled beverages, an equipped boat, gasoline, and a boat pilot per pair of anglers. The exact package price is not disclosed on the official website (there's a 'click here' link to a separate price table); third-party operators mention 5- to 6-night packages ranging from R$15,000 to R$22,000 per angler, but this does not come from the official source and may be outdated.

How to get there

Access is via Porto Velho (RO), not via Manaus. From there, the lodge arranges either air transfer (about 1h35 flight) or ground transfer to the lodge, depending on the package chosen — lodging in Porto Velho and airfare to get there are the angler's responsibility.
