Pousada Recanto dos Gigantes is located in Pimenteiras do Oeste (RO), on the banks of the Rio Guaporé — a border river with Bolivia, with deep channels and marginal lakes that sustain one of the strongest catfish fisheries in Rondônia. This is a region of boat-hotels and lodges dedicated almost exclusively to sport fishing, not a beach or sightseeing destination.

When to go

The strong fishing window on the Guaporé runs from July to October, the low-water period with clearer water — best for locating schools and working bottom bait. Note: from November 15th, the closed season (defeso) begins in Rondônia for tambaqui, redtail catfish (pirarara), surubim and caparari (running through March 15th), so November is no longer peak season for these species — contrary to what the original 'July to November' information suggested.

Pimenteiras do Oeste is the smallest municipality in Rondônia, about 800 km from Porto Velho. The usual access for fishing groups is via Vilhena-RO (approx. May 15th to July 15th) or through Cacoal-RO airport (July 25th to September 26th), followed by a road trip to the Guaporé region — it's worth confirming with the lodge which route and transfer it offers for the time of your trip.
