Open in FishNerdPousada Rio Roosevelt is located at the meeting of the Roosevelt and Madeirinha rivers, at the foot of the Santa Rita Waterfall, in southern Amazonas (access via Apuí-AM). It's the only lodge on the Roosevelt River, and access is by plane only — no roads or neighbors in the region, which keeps the fishing practically untouched. The waterfall is not navigable, so groups split between the stretch above and below it, taking turns throughout the day.
Confirmed species on site
- Piraíba — the house's giant leather catfish, caught in the deep holes
- Pirarara (redtail catfish) — presence confirmed by the official website
- Jaú, jundiá (driftwood catfish) and cachorra (payara) — catfish and bottom predators
- Peacock bass (tucunaré), pacu, pirapitinga and jatuarana — scaled fish in the current and bays
- Bicuda (needlefish/wolf-fish) and tucunaré-fogo (fire-red peacock bass) show up in fishing reports from the region, but aren't listed on the official website — worth confirming with the lodge before booking the package
When to go
The official website doesn't set exact months, but the Roosevelt River's pattern follows the water cycle: August through October, with the river low and the deep holes clearly marked, is peak season for peacock bass, cachorra (payara) and matrinxã on topwater technique. December through May, during the flood, is when piraíba, jaú and pirarara concentrate in deep holes and produce the heaviest specimens. June, July and November are transition months, with mixed scaled and leather fish fishing.
Lures and techniques
- Peacock bass: topwater plugs at dawn/dusk, jigs in the rapids, live bait (lambari, tuvira) in the deep holes
- Cachorra (payara) and bicuda: spinners and small plugs, casting near submerged structures
- Piraíba, jaú and pirarara (redtail catfish): bottom bait (whole fish or chunk), heavy sinker, reinforced rod and line
- Pacu: topwater bait with regional fruits in the flooded forest stretches
Facilities and price
There are 6 air-conditioned 55 m² cabins, facing the beach and the waterfall, with satellite internet (Starlink) and all-inclusive service (lodging, meals, drinks, boat with local guide). The official website doesn't publish a price table — you need to quote directly with the lodge. Market sources cite weekly packages between R$ 15,000 and R$ 26,000 per angler, a figure the lodge itself doesn't publicly confirm.
How to get there: access by air only, via the lodge's private airstrip, generally departing from Apuí-AM (there's no road to the location). Confirm route and departure point directly with the lodge — there's another lodge with a similar name on the same river, Amazon Roosevelt, at the meeting of the Roosevelt River with the Aripuanã River, in a different location.
