Where the bites are

Approximate points (≈5 km) — never a catch's exact spot, and not linked to the photos.

Super Açu operates on the Rio Preto, a tributary of the Rio Negro between Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos (AM), with access also to the Pantaleão, Caurés and Manso rivers. The setup combines a floating lodge (Super Floating, up to 16 anglers) with an optional mobile Glamping camp in double tents when the group heads upriver toward the headwaters while fishing, plus shallow-draft hotel boats (70 cm to 1 m) that can enter shallow stretches where conventional vessels can't pass.

Fishing is done in pairs, heading out from the lodge/boat in bass-boat-style platformed skiffs with front pedestal seats, a 60 to 100 HP outboard motor and a bow-mounted electric trolling motor (Minn Kota/MotorGuide), supported by smaller jon boats to get past sandbars and logs and reach restricted-access lagoons.

What you'll catch

  • Speckled peacock bass/paca peacock (tucunaré-açu/paca) (Cichla temensis) — the main trophy, able to top 10-12 kg
  • Butterfly peacock bass (tucunaré-borboleta) (Cichla orinocensis) — very present and hard-fighting
  • Peacock cichlid (tucunaré-popoca/tauá) (Cichla monoculus and related species)
  • Silver arowana (aruanã-prateada) along banks, backwaters and flooded forest (igapós)
  • Bicuda (needlefish-like peacock bait fish), jacundá (cichlid), trahira/giant trahira (traíra/trairão) and black piranha as bycatch
  • Redtail catfish (pirarara), tiger shovelnose catfish (caparari) and piraíba (giant catfish) occasionally in deep pools and confluences

Best time

The main window runs from September to January/February, the low-water period in the main channel and tributaries of the middle/upper Rio Negro. As the water recedes, fish leave the flooded forest (igapó) and concentrate along banks, island points, channels and lagoons, becoming more aggressive toward topwater lures. Repiquetes (sudden water-level rises caused by rain in the headwaters) can change fish behavior within this window.

Techniques and lures

Baitcasting gear dominates (retrieve ratio above 7.5:1, 55-65 lb line), and fly fishing is also available (#8 to #10 rods). For topwater, guides use propeller baits like the Rip Roller and Devassa, plus walking baits/sticks like the Deconto Z110/Z130, Biruta and Rebel Jumpin Minnow. For mid-water and twitchbait presentations, the Marine Sports Inna, Rapala Subwalk and X-Rap come into play. Bucktail jigs from 15 to 25 g work as a follow-up lure when fish miss the topwater strike.

Setup and rates

Packages cover about 5 to 6 days of fishing, lodging (Super Floating, Glamping, or air-conditioned cabin on the hotel boat), full board, drinks, boat with guide and fuel, and Starlink internet at the lodges. Rates are quoted on request, per angler per week. Airfare to Manaus, the amateur fishing license fee and tips are usually not included in the package.

Getting there

The trip starts with a commercial flight to Manaus (Eduardo Gomes airport), followed by a chartered or commercial flight to Santa Isabel do Rio Negro or Barcelos — in some packages, a floatplane departing directly from Manaus lands on the waters of the Rio Preto or Caurés. From the local airstrip, the final transfer to the lodge or hotel boat is done by speedboat along the river.
