Open in FishNerdPesqueiro Arujá is located in the Penhinha neighborhood, about 40 minutes from São Paulo via Via Dutra, and specializes in large Amazonian fish. The facility has four lakes with different profiles: Lake 1 holds the biggest specimens (tambaqui, redtail catfish, pirarucu, cachara), Lake 2 leans more toward tilapia and dourado, Lake 3 is a mix of everything (including carp), and Lake 4 is geared toward large tilapia and carp.
What you can catch
- Tambacu and tambaqui (Lake 1, main attraction)
- Redtail catfish (pirarara) — likely the same fish known internationally as Redtail Catfish
- Pirarucu, with specimens over 50 kg
- Cachara and pintado (spotted catfish)
- Pacu, dourado, matrinchã, tilapia, and carp (Hungarian, mirror, bighead) in lakes 2, 3, and 4
When to go
Available sources contradict each other on the best time to go, and none of them is the spot's official website, so treat this as a pointer, not a rule: there's a record that in winter the pirarucu are removed from the lakes and kept in a greenhouse, which suggests weaker fishing for that species during the colder period — favoring the October-to-March window for anyone after pirarucu. On the other hand, there's a report that the clearer water of the dry season (April to September) makes fish more active. It's worth calling ahead to confirm the lakes' condition on the day.
Techniques and baits that work
Bottom fishing is the most commonly cited method for tambaqui, tambacu, redtail catfish, and cachara, with P40 fish feed (sold on-site), tilapia head and gills, and sausage as go-to baits. For dourado, matrinchã, and tilapia, a torpedo float with beads tends to work well. The "cheese" bait tip could not be confirmed in any source consulted.
Facilities and prices
- Kiosks, restrooms, and parking on-site
- Restaurant serves only those who are fishing
- No overnight stay or camping option
- Open Thursday through Monday, 7 am to 6 pm (closed Tuesday and Wednesday for maintenance)
- Prices vary quite a bit across tourism sources (from R$70 to R$150, depending on the angler's profile) — none of them is the official channel, so confirm the price and payment method by phone or WhatsApp before heading out
