Tio Oscar is a fishing lodge about 45 minutes from São Paulo, on the Castelo Branco Highway, Km 75, heading inland. The main lake covers 31,000 m² of water fed by 58 springs, and there are two more secondary lakes. The most important detail for anyone who just wants to fish: according to the official website itself, fishing is exclusive to lodge guests — there is no day-fishing option for those who aren't staying overnight.

How the fishing works

  • Catch-and-release system with mandatory barbless hooks; fish can also be taken home, paid by the kilo
  • Prohibited: barbed hooks, braided/multifilament line, wire leaders, restraint pliers, and scale hooks placed directly on the fish
  • Use of a landing net is mandatory to remove the fish from the water
  • Artificial lures (plugs) are only allowed on specific lakes for predator species
  • The lake is large — a long rod (around 3.60m) and a sturdy reel/baitcasting reel are recommended for long casts

Species in the lake

The star species is the tambacu (a tambaqui-pacu hybrid), with reports of specimens over 36 kg. There are also carp (bighead carp, common carp, mirror carp, and grass carp), with bighead carp over 30 kg, plus surubim (pintado catfish), cachara catfish, dourado, pacu, tilapia, traíra (wolf fish), matrinxã, and African catfish. 'Catfish' is mentioned in anglers' reports, but no source specifically confirms the redtail catfish — treat this species with caution until confirmed.

Best season

Carp (especially bighead carp) bite year-round, with good activity also in fall and winter — the original claim about 'technical carp fishing in fall/winter' has some backing, but it's not exclusive to that season. Tambacu and other round-bodied fish pick up more in spring and summer, when the water warms up. Leather fish like surubim and cachara catfish also respond better in warm weather.

Techniques and bait

  • Chum/bait provided by the fishing lodge or allowed baits — it's worth checking the updated list upon arrival
  • Baits mentioned by anglers: paturi dough, beijinho dough, sausage, minhocoçu (giant earthworm), stale bread, and guabi soaked in cachaça
  • The peanut/banana dough for carp, from older listings, is not confirmed in any source consulted — it's possible it works, but there's no specific record of it at Tio Oscar

Facilities and lodging

The lodge has cabins ('Swiss'-style wood cabins as well as brick-and-mortar ones), full board, a restaurant with a wood-fired stove, pools, a small farm with animals, a playground, and train and horseback rides. The nightly lodging rates vary significantly across the sources consulted and could not be confirmed with the official website — treat any price as an estimate to be confirmed directly with the lodge.

How to get there and hours

  • Hours: Wednesday to Friday from 9am to 5pm; Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 8am to 5pm; closed Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Check-in until 11pm, check-out until noon
  • An original ID document is required to register each guest
  • Cards accepted; checks not accepted
