Pesqueiro Pitauá is the sport fishing lake of Centro de Lazer Pitauá, in Socorro-SP, on the Circuito das Águas Paulista. The system is catch-and-release: you don't rent a rod on site (bring your own), but you buy bait dough, feed and chum at the lodge. Barbless hooks, a landing net and a release mat are mandatory and provided by the fishing spot to protect the fish during photos and release.

What you can catch

  • Tambacu and Pacu — the bottom-feeding "redondos" (round fish), confirmed and guaranteed presence
  • Dourado and Matrinxã — the lake's casting targets
  • Tilapia and Corimba/Curimbatá — present, but of lesser sporting interest
  • Pintado (South American catfish) — a leather-skinned fish, slower and mostly nighttime fishing

Tambaqui, Patinga, Cachapira and Bighead Carp (Carpa Cabeçuda) show up in one of the sources, but couldn't be confirmed as populations specifically in the Pitauá lake — they may be confused with other fishing spots in Socorro. Treat this group as a possible bonus, not a guarantee.

When to go

September to March (spring and summer) is the period of highest activity: warmer water draws tambacu and pacu to the surface and makes dourado and matrinxã more aggressive toward lures. In autumn/winter, the Serra da Mantiqueira cools the nights and fishing becomes slower and more technical, working better on the bottom.

Baits and techniques that work here

  • Dourado and Matrinxã: small mid-water plugs, spinners and spoons — worked by casting
  • Pacu and Tambacu: bottom bait dough (peanut/banana flavor), soaked feed, corn or bread on a feeder float
  • Pintado: giant earthworm or a piece of fish on the bottom, in the afternoon/evening

Facilities and prices

Besides the lake, the complex has a restaurant with fish-based dishes, decks with covered kiosks, a green area and an inn. The sport fishing day rate runs around R$ 50 (half day) to R$ 60 (full day) — lower than the originally advertised range of R$ 60 to R$ 90. Bait, dough and restaurant consumption are charged separately. It's open Wednesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends/holidays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

How to get there

Rodovia Octávio de Oliveira Santos, Km 3, Socorro-SP — a few minutes from downtown, with free on-site parking, including for vans and buses. Socorro is about 180 km from São Paulo and 100 km from Campinas, both via paved highway.
