Tarpon

Megalops atlanticus

Known for breathtaking acrobatic leaps and sheer endurance, Tarpon is one of the most sought-after gamefish in coastal and inshore waters. Equipped with a distinctive upturned mouth and brilliant silver armor-like scales, Tarpon possesses a specialized swim bladder that allows breathing atmospheric air directly from the surface. Highly adaptable, Tarpon thrives across estuaries, mangrove lagoons, river mouths, and open ocean flats. Anglers treasure encounters with Tarpon because hookups often result in rapid reel-screaming runs paired with violent, thrashing aerial displays.

How to catch it

Sight-cast around rolling schools, bridges, or tidal cuts. When pursuing Tarpon, use stout fluorocarbon shock leaders to withstand abrasive jaws, and lower the rod tip to ease line tension whenever jumps occur to prevent thrown hooks.

Lures that work

  • Live crabs and mullet
  • Soft plastic paddle-tail swimbaits
  • Topwater walk-the-dog plugs
  • Saltwater streamer flies
  • Heavy bucktail jigs

Season

Activity peaks throughout late spring and summer during coastal migration runs, while resident juveniles can be targeted inside backwaters year-round.
