Blue Tilapia
Oreochromis aureus
Blue Tilapia is a species of freshwater and brackish water cichlid native to Africa and the Middle East, widely introduced into tropical and subtropical water bodies. It features a compressed body with blue-gray coloration, a lighter belly, and reddish or pink margins on the dorsal and caudal fins. Inhabiting reservoirs, lakes, canals, and slow-moving rivers, Blue Tilapia demonstrates high tolerance to variations in salinity and temperature. The diet is omnivorous with a strong herbivorous and detritivorous tendency, consuming algae, decomposing plant matter, zooplankton, and small invertebrates.

How to catch it
To fish for Blue Tilapia, use thin monofilament or fluorocarbon lines rigged with small hooks and light sinkers. A small float technique or bottom still fishing rig works very well. Cast near shoreline structures, aquatic vegetation, or shallow, sunny areas where specimens of Blue Tilapia usually feed.
Lures that work
- Flavored dough bait
- Cooked sweet corn
- Earthworms
- Small fly nymphs
- Small grubs on micro jig heads
Season
Activity of Blue Tilapia peaks during spring and summer, decreasing significantly during cold fronts or in winter.
