FishNerd vs FishAngler: the free one and the almost-free one (2026)

FishAngler is the app people recommend when someone says Fishbrain is too expensive. It is well rated — 4.8 stars across 14,000 ratings on the US App Store, the best score of any app we compare — and it is usually described as free. That description is close enough to be useful and wrong enough to matter.

The App Store listing shows FishAngler is free with in-app purchases: FishAngler VIP at $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year. So this comparison is not free versus paid. It is free-with-a-tier versus free-with-no-tier, and the question is whether the tier is buying you something you want.

What FishAngler does well

A lot, for the money. The listing advertises an AI fishing guide it calls FINN, fish identification across 866+ species, a catch log with 45 or more attributes per catch, weather and tide charts, solunar bite windows, 3D lake and ocean contour maps, community fishing groups and IGFA world and state records. That is most of Fishbrain's feature list, and the VIP tier is roughly half of Fishbrain's price.

If you want the widest feature set for the least money, FishAngler is the strongest case on this page, and the rating suggests its users agree.

Where the tier sits

What we can verify is the price: $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year for VIP. What the listing does not spell out is exactly which features move behind it, so the feature table above marks the contour maps as partial and leaves offline use unknown rather than guessing. If a specific map layer matters to you, the honest advice is to install it and see where the upgrade prompt appears.

None of that is a criticism. It is the same model as every other app here except one, and FishAngler's version of it is the cheapest.

What FishNerd does differently

FishNerd's catch log fills itself in. One photo identifies the species by AI and attaches the weather, pressure trend, moon phase, solunar window and tide at that moment, automatically. FishAngler's log has more fields to fill; FishNerd's has fewer to fill because it fills them.

The social side is private groups — a shared feed, map, album and leaderboard for your own crew, joined by code, link or QR — mirrored into WhatsApp as catch cards. There is a barcode-scanning tackle box, and local regulations attach to each catch. And there is no tier: no VIP, no subscription, no in-app purchases, stated as free forever on the homepage.

What FishNerd does not have

No 3D contour maps, no depth charts, no offline maps. FishAngler has contour maps and FishNerd does not, and if that is what you fish by, that decides it.

No IGFA records, no public community feed. FishNerd's groups are for the people you fish with, not a directory of everyone who fishes.

Who should pick which

Pick FishAngler if you want the biggest feature set per dollar and do not mind that some of it is VIP. At $49.99 a year it is the best value of the paid apps here.

Pick FishNerd if you want the log to do the work — species and conditions attached from a photo — with your own group, and you want the word free to mean what it says.

The honest verdict

FishAngler is the better deal among apps that charge, and it charges less than the others. FishNerd is the one that does not charge. If a $49.99 tier is fine with you, FishAngler's feature list is hard to beat. If it is not, there is exactly one app on this page where that question never comes up.
